| Description |
The
E-type Jaguar quite simply amazed the world when it first appeared
at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, never had there been such
an affordable supercar with such immense performance. Early
pre-production cars could reach a claimed 150mph, although most
production cars were capable of not much more than 140mph.
The E-type 3.8 litre Coupe featured the same twin-cam, six
cylinder engine and "Moss Box" transmission as the
roadster version. The car's bodywork consisted of a skimpy
fastback shell coupled with a long, swoopy bonnet. The interior
had only two bucket seats but did at least have a practical
luggage area behind them, complete with an opening rear hatch
/ tailgate.
This early E-type was an instant success, the first of many
closed E-type variants to arrive. Retrospectively these cars
have become known as the Series 1 and are now quite sought
after.
